Lama Zopa Rinpoche, a renowned Tibetan Buddhist teacher and meditator, has given his blessing for the founding of a centre in Canberra. Rinpoche has already blessed the centre-to-be with a name ­ Chengawa Centre. The Centre will offer Buddhist teachings and practices from the Gelugpa lineage of Vajrayana Buddhism, founded in Tibet by Lama Tsong Khapa (aka Je Rinpoche) in the 14th century.

The Cambodian Buddhist Monastery is located at 68 Tarlington Parade, Bonnyrigg, NSW, known as WATT KHEMARANGSARAM, and plays four different roles in serving the community. Firstly, the monastery is an avenue for those wishing to join the chastity of monkhood. Secondly, it offers Buddhist seminars once a week where religious advice and teaching is available for those in need of guidance. The monastery also consists of a housing compartment for monks in residence in which they conduct private study and mediation. Finally, it also holds the office of the Cambodian Community of NSW Inc, which provides a referral and interpretation service for local Cambodian residents.
Specifically, the monastery consists of four dwellings. The first is the PREAH VIHEAR (temple). This is used as a forum for initiation into monkhood; it is also a meeting place for forward planning and direction of the monastery and religion. Finally, it acts as a conduit for any disputes and resolutions between monks. The second dwelling is the Buddhist Hall; this is a general function area which can hold anything from a special charity function to the day-to-day lunch mass. There is also a housing compartment for the monks and the head office of the Cambodian Community of NSW Inc.

The Wat Phrayortkeo Temple enters the stream of practice in the Theravada tradition. Wat Phrayortkeo (Lao Buddhist Society of NSW Inc) is a Buddhist centre offering a peaceful refuge and environment for self-awareness. This temple was set up by the Lao community who came to Australia as refugees in early 1976 after the Communists took over Laos. The Lao Community Advancement Co-op and the lay people set up a centre where they can have a temple, a kuti (residence for the monks) and a multi-purpose hall for the community. The monastery situated on 99 acres, 9 kms from Bundanoon along the road to Goulburn, borders a national park stretching 30kms to Jervis Bay. Few monastic sites are its equal in terms of breathtaking views, a dozen friendly, accommodating monks, vegetarian food, pristine air and water, idyllic forest setting, wildlife - woodducks, peacocks, lyre birds, wombats and wallabies - tranquility and opportunity for meditation practice. Abbot, Ven. Noom, though only about 5th or 6th in line of seniority, presides with a balance between strictness and liberality, drawing on skills learned from Thai forest masters and as a successful businessman.

As there is a lot of free time, the Wat is ideal for experienced meditators or those not requiring structured meditation.

Gorricks Run (Sydney Zen Centre Meditation Retreat)

• Sesshin occurs several times a year, and offers the opportunity for intensive practice with a teacher, often including the ceremony of jukai, when students formally take the Precepts. Our next six-week introductory meditation course will commence on Tuesday 31st August, at the Bardon Community Hall, rear 247 Simpsons Road, Bardon (Bowman Park, UBD reference map158 L6: opposite the Uniting Church). The evenings will start at 7pm and finish at 9pm. On the first evening of the course please plan to arrive by 6:50pm - the doors will be open from 6:30pm. The cost for the course is $80 and concessions are available if required. This course will cover the basic principles and practices of traditional Buddhist meditation to develop a calm and positive state of mind.
Two complimentary practices will be taught - the Mindfulness of Breathing and Loving-Kindness meditation or Mettabhavana. Other topics such as meditation posture, dealing with difficulties, the positive factors of meditation, and how to work in meditation will also be covered. Each weekly session will include short talks, group discussion, and a practical session of meditation. Full course notes will be supplied each week. Meditation cushions, mats and stools will be provided, and chairs will also be available.

The aim of this course is to provide the understanding and practical experience necessary to establish and maintain an effective ongoing meditation practice. This course is open to everyone.

Ordinary Mind Zen Brisbane Inc is an affiliate group of the Ordinary Mind Zen School established by Charlotte Joko Beck. The Group’s resident teacher is a Dharma Successor of Charlotte Joko Beck. The group is a non-profit, incorporated association.
The group’s practice emphasises both the cultivation of clear present awareness (traditionally the "just sitting" of Soto Zen) and the engagement of practice in the circumstances of everyday life.
The group meets in suburban Toowong, about 5km from central Brisbane. As well as weekly meetings for sitting (zazen), the group also conducts orientations for newcomers, extended sittings of half-day duration, non-residential practice intensives of from 1-3 days, and longer residential intensives (sesshin).
Individual interviews (daisan) with the group’s resident teacher form the basic instructional method, together with dharma talks, and occasional events conducted by visiting teachers. Founded in 1989 by the late teacher Zen Master Seung Sahn, internationally renowned Grand Master of the Kwan Um School of Zen, the Queensland Zen Centre – Dae Kwang Sa or “Great Light Temple” is a residential training temple for students of Zen Buddhism. 
The temple offers a training program consisting of daily meditation practice, monthly retreats, and introductory courses for persons interested in discovering their life direction.  In awakening the Bodhisattva ideal, one’s essence is realized and spontaneously functions for the benefit of all beings.
The formal aspects of Zen training consist of sitting and bowing meditation, chanting of sutras, and kong-an practice, a process of direct inquiry into one’s true nature as it appears in each moment.  The temple’s resident teacher oversees all aspects of Zen training including giving Dharma talks and kong-an interviews.
The temple’s resident teacher is Zen Master Sen Shin.  An ordained nun since 1990, Zen Master Sen Shin received transmission in Zen Master Seung Sahn’s lineage from Zen Master Dae Gak in 2006.
Zen Master Sen Shin also oversees the teaching at the Queensland Zen Centre’s practice groups at Nundah (Nundah Zen Group) in Brisbane and at Runaway Bay (Gold Coast Zen Group) at the Gold Coast.

Dhamma Rasmi ("Rasmi" means ray of light or sunshine) is in a beautiful sub-tropical area known as the Sunshine Coast, 140 km north of Brisbane.
Forty acres were purchased in 1989 and another twenty acres in 1993. The land is gently sloping and partly timbered, with a small tree-lined creek. Facilities include a high-ceilinged octagonal hall for 200 students, dormitories for 30, a kitchen/dining building, and a reception/administration area with servers rooms. The next phase of accommodation includes six 2-bed cottages and shady tent sites.
A minimum of two courses are held at the centre each month. A growing number of meditators have settled in the area to help the management, and gain benefit by visiting for group meditation. Other frequent visitors are a family of kangaroos and smaller marsupials, who live in the eucalypt forest nearby.
These courses are conducted by Assistant Teachers to S.N.Goenka of the Vipassana International Academy, India.

Established in 1996, Adelaide Non-Sectarian Buddhist Group - Tsechen Thubten Choe Ling, provides a platform for teachers from all traditions of Buddhism to deliver their message to the people of South Australia. 
    The group of dedicated volunteers has hosted the visits of many Buddhist teachers. The group formally invites Buddhist teachers from interstate and overseas to teach in Adelaide. We also petition the organisers of the national and international tours of Buddhist teachers to include South Australia on their teaching schedule.
    During his visit to Adelaide, His Eminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche formalised the group by giving the name Tsechen Thubten Choe Ling on his official paper bearing his personal crest with his donation for the group to purchase a representation of the Buddha. The word "Tsechen" is the Tibetan word for the Sanskrit "Mahakaruna".  Tsechen Thubten Choe Ling translates as "Great Compassion Dharma Garden of Buddhadharma".
The Group was a founding member of the Buddhist Council of South Australia and is currently the Secretary of the Council.

Ten-day residential courses in vipassana meditation are held twice annually. All ten-day courses begin the evening of the first day and end early morning of the last day. Vipassana means to see things as they really are. We try to hold a sesshin (meditation retreat) at least once a year. This can be for three, five or seven days. Non-members are welcome to these events. We do not have a resident teacher, but our sesshins are usually led by Ross Bolleter, Roshi from Perth, a teacher of the Diamond Sangha, and Dharma heir of John Tarrant, Roshi.
At irregular intervals (several months), we organise Introduction to Zen Meditation evenings. At these, we provide information and explanation about our group, the Zen tradition and our practices, including demonstrations, and short meditation periods which visitors are encouraged to join in.
We have a fairly extensive library of Zen books, as well as numerous tapes of talks given by various teachers including Ross Bolleter, John Tarrant, Robert Aitken, Thich Nhat Hanh and others. These can be borrowed by members for extended periods.

The Teachers: Dr Gabriel "Jîvasattha" Bittar, a Researcher with PhD in Interdisciplinary Sciences from the University of Geneva and lecturing at the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, Universities of Geneva and Lausanne - Jîvasattha ("Science of Life") is working on a book on Buddhism. Assistance is given by Jîvasattha's wife, Jîvarakkhî ("Protector of Life"). Both teachers are of the Theravâda tradition and have instructed (and still are) on Buddhist philosophy and meditation, in Geneva, Switzerland, at an Adult College, before settling on Kangaroo Island.
In the Theravâda tradition, Dhamma teaching is a free donation (dâna) by the teachers, and reciprocal support donations by the students are possible and encouraged. Accordingly, for people who wish to stay at Buddhâyatana, for a meditation and Dhamma-study retreat, there is no fare. We have simple, but reasonably comfortable camping accommodation, with sheltering, electricity, toilet, hot shower, and kitchen sink. Please bring your sleeping bag and towels - for international wanderers lightly equiped, we can provide linen and towels. In the tradition of dâna, those on retreat may contribute to the cost of their stay, with gifts of vegetarian food, candles or incense, monetary donations in the dâna vase, and/or with contribution in work. Those students and meditants preferring to stay at the Lodge would have to pay the B&B tariff, but they would enjoy a 10% reduction on the usual tariff.
Buddhâyatana (Buddhâyatana, "abode of the Awakened One") is the founding location of a new Foundation being set up, called Buddhayatana (Buddha-yatana, "endeavour of the Awakened One"). It is meant to be a movement, built around monks, nuns and lay-persons, having for its objective the promotion of the Way of the Buddha, in respect of the tradition and with awareness to modern conditions. Underlying this objective is an intention to help non Buddhists to become aware of the Buddha's teachings and the Way Things Are (the "Dhamma"), as well as to help Buddhists to better understand the Dhamma and to better practice on the Way.
Accordingly, the objects and purposes of Buddhayatana are:
1. To provide teachings of Buddhist meditation and philosophy.
2. To provide for meditation and Dhamma-study retreats.
3. To do it in a non-sectarian way, and be open to everyone wishing to progress on the path of serenity.

The Lifeflow Meditation Centre is a wholly Australian, non-profit, educational organisation. The centre is situated at Lorinna, a quiet secluded valley which is heavily forested with tall eucalyptus trees and pockets of dense temperate rain forest. The 25 hectare property boasts such unique natural features as limestone caves, a waterfall and a host of species of flora including silver birches, maple and the ancient gingko trees.
Facilities include the Gompa, (meditation hall) named Drowo Lung, which is a unique six-sided log cabin with shingle roof and may be the only one of it's kind. The kitchen is the centre's meeting place, providing cooking facilities, dormitory accommodation, a common room/dining room and ablution block. Other accommodation facilities include three cabins set in the forest and two small A-frame cabins for families and couples. Dhamma Pabha (which means "radiance" or "glow of Dhamma") is nestled in a forest in the slopes of Mt Dromedary, forty minutes by road from Hobart. The tall trees and the bushland setting are far from the noises of civilisation, trains or traffic, the only sounds being those of the native wildlife.
After twelve years of holding courses at hired campsites, the first course was held at Dhamma Pabha in December 1994 using temporary facilities. There is now a warm and comfortable meditation hall, kitchen and office. The next project will be to build more permanent accommodation for the students. Despite Tasmania's isolation and small population, a dedicated group of Vipassana students are building a peaceful sanctuary of Dhamma in the forest there.
Ten-day residential courses in vipassana meditation are held every month. All ten-day courses begin the evening of the first day and end early morning of the last day. Vipassana means to see things as they really are. In a ten-day course students learn to develop heightened awareness and concentration, which is then used to examine their own mental and physical nature. By this practice they gain insight and detachment to free themselves from such mental tensions as anger, greed and fear.

Ordinary Mind Zen Melbourne group is planning two visits by Geoff
Dawson to Melbourne for 2007 -- the first will be a workshop on the 21st of July, followed by a 2 day meditation intensive on the 22nd and 23rd -- the workshop can be
taken together with the meditation intensive or on its own. There will also be a five day meditation intensive over the Cup long weekend from 2nd to the 6th of November. These will all be held at the Vines and Branches Personal Growth Centre in Lower Plenty, and costs will be kept to a minimum.
